In 2006, an important series of experiments on ecotoxicology of detergents was published in the journal HYDROBIOLOGIA, (2006, Volume: 556, Pages: 381-386) by an international team of researchers. This was the first paper that reported the experiments that showed that all three main kinds of synthetic surfactants (detergent chemicals) slow down the filtration of water by key marine organisms, filter-feeders, bivalves, namely, the marine mussels of the Atlantic Ocean (Mytilus edulis). http://www.scribd.com/doc/45958156

Until now the role of mollusks as links between ecological and geochemical processes was underestimated. The paper discovered the role of mollusks as key biomachines that drive massive flows of chemical elements including C, N, P, Si, Al in the biosphere, and hazards from pollutants as inhibitors of these flows. New data on coupling of geochemical and ecological (hydrobiological) processes. The role of freshwater mollusks, pond snails (Lymnaea stagnalis) in the flows of chemical elements in the biosphere was studied by detecting the elemental composition and amount of pellets produced by the mollusks.

For the first time, the following was quantitatively studied:

(1) the elemental composition (C, N, P, Si, Al) of the pellets formed by mollusks Lymnaea stagnalis feeding on the green leaves of the higher plants Nuphar lutea and Taraxacum officinale;

(2) the amount (wet weight, dry weight) of pellets formed by L. stagnalis feeding on the leaves of N. lutea and T. officinale;

(3) the transfer of matter and chemical elements (C, N, P, Si, Al)  with pellets of freshwater bivalves (unionids Unio sp., etc.) per unit biomass of mollusks and per unit area of the ecosystem of the river;

(4) the transfer of matter and chemical elements (C, N, P, Si, Al) with the pellets of L. stagnalis per unit biomass of mollusks and per unit area of the ecosystem of the pond.

Synthetic surfactants tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (ТDТМА) 2 mg/l, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) 1-2 mg/l, and  the laundry detergent (one of common detergents, Tide-Lemon) 75 mg/l inhibited the trophic activity (feeding rate) of the snails (L. stagnalis). Percents of food assimilability of taxons of invertebrates, from Rotatoria (48-80) to Diptera (1-31)].

Explanation of some comments to the title of this journal: after 1991, this journal is an English translation of proceedings of the Russian Academy of Sciences (not of the USSR Academy of Sciences). However, in some computer data bases the old comment on the title (with mentioning of the USSR, namely: proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Biological sciences sections) is kept. The mention of ‘USSR’ is outdated, obsolete. The bottom line is: the formal title of this journal is: Doklady Biological Sciences.

The achievement that was cited:

The ecological theory of how aquatic ecosystem and the biological community function toward improving water quality (both in freshwater and in seawater) was formulated in the well-cited paper of a scientist of Moscow University. This theory, inter alia,  discovered and analyzed – to a better degree than it was done before – the multi-aspect role of aquatic organisms that are filter-feeders. This achievement was used by the authors of the new paper co-authored by scientists of Poland, China, Korea. They used the theory to better analyze their new data on marine bivalve mollusk, marine mussels Mytilus.

New conceptualization and terminology in science of ecology: Biomachinery (author of the term: a scientist at M.V.Lomonosov Moscow State University)

New terminology in science: Biomachinery (the author is a scientist at M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University)

Новый термин. В научную терминологию введен новый термин: Biomachinery (автор термина: научный сотрудник МГУ им. М.В.Ломоносова)

How the term ‘biomachinery’ was introduced to environmental and biological science:

The story started in 1998.

In 1998, Dr. S.A. Ostroumov initiated and later chaired the session “Ecosystems as Hi-Tech Water Purification Biomachinery” at the ASLO Meeting Limnology and Oceanography: Navigating into the Next Century. February 1-5, 1999, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the U.S.A.; it is the first time that he introduced the scientific term ‘biomachinery’.  Publication: See the abstract: Ostroumov S.A. Integrity-oriented approach to ecological biomachinery for self-purification and bioremediation in aquatic ecosystems. – Limnology and Oceanography: Navigating into the Next Century. February 1-5, 1999, Santa Fe, New Mexico. ASLO (American Society of Limnology and Oceanography), Waco, TX. 1999. P. 134;

The term is clear in its 2-part structure and almost self-explanatory. It conveys the idea of a mix of two things in mechanisms of functioning of ecological systems: one thing is individual biological organisms, and the second thing is their complex self-organization into a well-structured and efficient system so that  the entire system functions as a hi-tech machine.

Biomachinery for maintaining water quality and natural water self-purification in marine and estuarine systems: elements of a qualitative theory. – International Journal of Oceans and Oceanography, ISSN 0973-2667, Vol.1, No.1 (2006), pp. 111-118 © Research India Publications; http://www.ripublication.com/ijoo.htm;

Abstract: Fundamental elements are formulated for a qualitative theory of the multi-functional (polyfunctional) role of the biota in maintaining self-purification and water quality in aquatic ecosystems. The elements of the theory covers the following: (1) sources of energy for the mechanisms of self-purification; (2) the main functional blocks of the system of self-purification; (3) the list of the main processes that are involved; (4) analysis of the degree of participation of the main large taxons; (5) degree of reliability and the main mechanisms providing the reliability; (6)regulation of the processes; (7) the response of the system towards the external influences(man-made impacts); (8) the analogy between ecosystems and a bioreactor; and (9)conclusions relevant to the practice of biodiversity conservation. In support of the theory, results are given of the author’s experiments which demonstrated the ability of some pollutants (surfactants, detergents, and some others) to inhibit the water filtration activity of marine filter-feeders (namely, the bivalve mollusks  mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, Mytilus edulis, and oysters Crassostrea gigas). Key words: Ecosystems, pollution, water quality, water self-purification, filter-feeders. Abbreviations: LD – liquid detergent; SD- synthetic detergent; SDS – sodiumdodecylsulphate; TDTMA – tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide;

As it was mentioned above, the term ‘biomachinery’ was a part of the name for a scientific session that was initiated, organized, and chaired by Dr. S.Ostroumov in 1999 in the U.S.A. It was mentioned in Internet and immediately attracted attention. Many people liked it. Now this word became a new part of English language. Now this word is in use.

Will wars of future be related to modern science and theories of ecology?
Key issues, water quality: scientific fundamentals, achievements, discoveries, bibliography.
About 400 billion gallons water is used worldwide each day. The goal of this material is to consider some publications in ecology and environmental science that are focused on aquatic ecosystems and their role in maintaining high level of water quality [see sites 1 – 4]. In pristine aquatic bodies – both marine and freshwater ecosystems – why is water pure, transparent, clear, of high water quality?
Until recently, the scientific fundamentals of this issue have not been completely understood. They were not understood until the recent series of papers authored by a scientist of M.V.Lomonosov Moscow University (see [2, 4]).
In this series of articles, what are the main ACHIEVEMENTS? The key achievements are making a new conceptualization and formulating a multi-aspect theory of how aquatic ecosystems and their biological communities with organisms of many biological species work towards improving water quality. These became the key achievements that were presented in the author’s publications [1-4, and therein].
To facilitate the innovative analysis and formulating a new theory, the author proposed some new scientific terminology [3] .
What are the relevant DISCOVERIES? They are some individual steps towards building this new conceptualization. They are 18 steps (discoveries) that were listed and described in [1].
Many experts think that the wars of future will perhaps be wars for water – in more precise terms, the wars for clear waters, for waters of good water quality. The theory mentioned above is perhaps an encouraging victory in another war – the eternal war of knowledge against ignorance.
